How to be a Superyoung: Why Some People Never Age

“Youth’s a stuff will not endure,” said Shakespeare – wrongly. The Bard had reckoned without the Superyoung: Those irritating folks who seem to age at a more leisurely pace than the rest of us. Photographed in 1998 and more recently, Jennifer Lopez (47) looks virtually untouched by time. So do Halle Berry (50), Cindy Crawford (50), Aaron Kwok (51) and Christie Brinkley (62), who are antithesis to the conventional expectations of how a 50 year-old or Grandma should look like. Why? How? Can we all do it? Scientists are finally figuring out what the deal is. And no, it’s not (just) plastic surgery.

guesstheirageThe Wise Words of Coco Chanel: “Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve.” Nothing illustrates this better than a side-by-side comparison of the prematurely aged Lindsay Lohan, versus chronologically older but ageless stars like Halle Berry, Cindy Crawford, Aaron Kwok and Christie Brinkley.

SKIN AGEING AND PERCEIVED AGE

Now…where do we even start? A study to evaluate the relative contribution of 4 common beauty woes to the perception of age suggests that dark spots add the most years in Chinese women, followed by saggy skin, lines and dark circles. In contrast, wrinkles and sagging skin seem to be the biggest age indicators in Caucasian women, ahead of dark spots and dark circles.

The Best & Brightest Against Spots: 1. Sloane Inc. DermaBoost Resveratrol & Pearl serves up a power dose of not one, but two potent spot lighteners, along with skin protective super-antioxidants and cell longevity booster. Sprinkle a tiny amount in your moisturiser for spotless fair translucency and luminous youthful skin; 2. La Roche Posay Mela-D Pigment Control utilizes both glycolic and kojic acids to diminish those dark spots. Bonus: Glycolic acid is also an acne-cum-wrinkle-fighter, too; 3. Chanel Le Blanc L’Extrait is a intensive night treatment that eliminates melanin buildup with TXC, the first Western brightening ingredient to earn Japan’s equivalent of FDA approval; 4. Shiseido White Lucent MicroTargeting Spot Corrector has SAKURAResist Technology to zero in on troublesome marks and prevent future spots from further cropping up.

A recent genetic study also lent insight into exactly how a woman’s skin ages by decade: Decline in antioxidant protection response (20s); decline in skin bioenergy (30s); decline in cellular regeneration (40s); decline in skin barrier function (50s); acceleration of all the above (60s). Although many “exceptional skin agers” in the study are found to be genetically programmed to biochemically hold out for longer, how these “lucky skin” genes are expressed can be influenced by lifestyle choices and skincare habits as well.

This explains why Laser Toning and Revitalift are highly popular dermal energizing treatments to brighten tired complexions or stubborn dark circles, even out early hyperpigmentation, and boost healthy collagen regrowth to keep open pores and fine lines at bay for those in their late-20s to 30s; whilst SmartX Lite and Dream Sculpture are two new “firm” favourites amongst women (and men) 40 years and above to renew and rebuild a stronger cellular and collagen architecture, smooth velvety texture and spotless skin that radiates luminous youth. Dr Low Chai Ling, medical director of The Sloane Clinic, agrees that this propensity towards aesthetic treatments is the reason why many women are looking younger than their actual age in recent years. “My patients don’t wait for lines to appear before they seek Botox or fillers anymore. More asking for Dream Sculpture, our signature all-round natural anti-aging treatment to prevent signs of aging”.

HAIR AGEING AND PERCEIVED AGE

Tiny but mighty, hair dye is a Nobel-prize-worthy youth freshener most of us depend on to drop years instantly…until significant thinning happens, that is. A new survey by John Hopkins Universtity has confirmed what many a receding man fears: Hair loss does pile on years prematurely, while draining your mojo. In fact, these follicularly challenged men shaved an average of 3.6 years off their faces after their hair transplant, on top of scoring higher in terms of appearing more attractive, successful and approachable – a potential plus point, for both workplace and social success.

Hair transplant isn’t solely for men. As hair transplant technology and technique become more sophisticated, ARTAS Robotic eyebrow hair restoration for women is the hottest transplant trend, with brow transplant inquiries increasing by a staggering 45% since 2010, according to a UK plastic surgery group. Previously, this was reserved for those who had suffered major brow loss due to chemotherapy, burns and other scarring trauma. Today, brow transplant candidates are mostly ladies with thinning brows due to ageing or over-plucking, or even genetically meagre-arched maidens who find that filling in their brows with makeup or temporary tattoos just doesn’t cut it. “In our clinics, we are seeing an increase in interest for not just scalp hair transplant but brow transplant and other female hair-related issues,” says Dr Chua Han Boon, also from The Sloane Clinic.

Great Power Comes With Great Eyebrows: While we now know that people literally can’t identify your face without eyebrows (according to a MIT study), celebrity brow growth over the years is living proof that those influential arches wield the power to transform and rejuvenate.

BODY & MIND AGEING AND PERCEIVED AGE

Results from long-running research that tracked 18 biomarkers in 1000 people over 12 years found that those who looked super young for their age really were ageing slower! Conversely, subjects who were biologically ageing more rapidly than their actual years were less physically able, showed brain ageing, suffered worse health, and looked older.

Beyond clinical indications, a person’s ageing was found to be influenced by their own perceptions of their well-being or biological age, and by that of others. So the real Fountain of Youth could be lying right between our ears.

bestbodyJLo tells People magazine how she stays looking like a Perfect 10: “I try to always to get as much sleep as I can so that I can start the day well rested and do my morning meditation and affirmations,” Then, it’s time for “hard work”. “It’s no secret that I love dancing, so it doesn’t even feel like exercise to me. I freestyle dance with Tracy Anderson five times a week. We’ll incorporate light weights (3 lbs) for the arms and moves that focus on the butt and thighs and engage the core.” That’s just the beginning. “I also do circuit training with David Kirsch when I’m in New York. We do hour-long circuits at least three times a week. Its full-body training — so planks, pushups, boxing — really everything. It’s all about changing it up and keeping your body guessing.”

So how does JLo do it? Simply put: She’s a true SuperYoung, inside and out! The youthful way she looks, the youthful way she moves, the youthful way she thinks and talks: All that is most likely a function of good genes, a good doctor, a good trainer and good old-fashioned discipline – she’s said to never touch alcohol, to maintain a steady diet of beauty staples such as lasers and proven skincare, as well as a daily routine of resting well, meditation and tough workouts (though we suspect the much younger boyfriend might have helped, too). Those years of hard work has definitely paid off.
